Recipes: Grandma's Date Bars

*this is the original recipe my Grandma gave me, I love those old recipe cards..so cute!  And can you believe how good her hand writting is?!*
I have the most wonderful memories associated with this recipe, of Thanksgivings and Christmases up at Grandma and Grandpa's big house on the ranch...always a day or two before the big holidays Grandma would begin getting the tell-tale treats ready.  First she'd pull out the old popcorn popper *a hideous avacado thing from the 70's* and would pop a bunch of corn and I couldn't seem to understand why it didn't taste like the popcorn my mom made out of the bag this stuff had no flavor!  Then when she got a big pan of it she'd pour caramel over it and it just made the best caramel corn...then she'd make sugared walnuts covered in sugar, brown sugar, and cinnamon.  We always had so many walnuts because Grandpa was always doing some project or another for the walnut ranch and they'd give him a bunch so you always got to take some home from Grandma's.  Then it would be time to make the date bars, now I mean it when I say these Smell like Thanksgiving.  To me making them just so the smell fills the house is totally worth it, I can't explain it but even served cold they taste warm, cozy, and Happy.  Maybe it's the memories I have of all the good times these date bars made their appearance but I never remember anyone *family or not* only taking one so they've got to be pretty good and I need to share them with you!

♥ This recipe comes from the kitchen of my lovely Grandmother Donna Powers ♥
*if you don't like walnuts or dates you can substitute any kind of nut and raisins work just as well as dates*

{I'm apologizing ahead of time, after the first few pictures the camera had a malfunction so I had to switch to iphone}

Soften up a cup of butter in the microwave or set it out ahead of time.  Then proceed to add the 2 cups of sugar.

Cream that together with the blender till it's pretty and fluffy looking!

Add the eggs one at a time, mixing after each addition.  Then add baking soda and water, mix again.

Combine all the remaining dry ingrediants, whisk together!

Yes, even the dates and walnuts!  Mix it all together thuroughly then place in the fridge for about 3 hours.

Then on a lightly floured surface make the dough into rolls *exact details at the bottom of post*

Use your fingers and flatten onto a greased baking sheet.

After you sprinkle the remaining sugar on top they're ready to go in the oven! ...Just so you know I made these WAY to big
*...actually husband did but that's a different story*

Then pop 'em in at 350 for 15-20mins!  And remember to cut them  while they're still hot!

I really hate how this photo turned out it doesn't make them nearly look as attractive as they are.  They are amazing, they smell beautiful and your taste buds will say THANK YOU...I promise.

What you'll need

1 cup of butter
2 cups sugar
3 eggs
1 tsp baking soda
2 tsps water
1 cup chopped dates
3 cups flour
1 tbs cinnamon *or more you can really go wild with the cinnamon*
1 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp ground cloves
A dash of salt *now really what is a dash?  I put in 1/4 tsp as well*
1 cup of chopped walnuts
2 tbs sugar *save this for topping at the end*

Directions

Cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy
Add eggs one at a time, beat well after Each egg is added
Add baking soda and water to creamed mixture, blend together
In a seperate bowl combine flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, salt, nuts, and dates whisk all together
add gradually to the creamed mixture
mix the dough thuroughly
Place in the fridge for 3hours
On a lightly floured surface shape the dough into rolls about 10inches long and 3/4 inches in diameter
Plance on buttered *non-stick spray or cooking oil will work just as well* baking sheet and with your fingers flatten to 1/4 inch thick
then sprinkle with the remaining sugar
Bake at 350 for 15-20 minutes
Cut while still hot *and Grandma always cuts them diagonally*

Second Hand Sunday

Welcome to Second Hand Sunday, this is going to be a bit different than usual.  This is the Home Remedy edition of Second Hand Sunday!  I'm only sharing a few on here but I just thought maybe some of you don't know these things!  And I couldn't get by without them, so I need to share the wealth here!  And I mean it's family tradition and also considered second hand information so it works right? Right.

So if you don 't know what this is, it's Aloe Vera.  An amazing plant!  This isn't exactly a home remedy more of a good idea.  When I was a little girl running around with about 10 of my cousins up at my Grandma Donna's house someone *inevitably me being the youngest and the only girl* would fall and hurt themselves, get a scratch, sometimes even a burn, or a sunburn, rope burn, a cut from something we shouldn't have been playing with...pretty much anything and everything you could think of we were told could be fixed with aloe vera...not the kind in the bottle you get at the store but the plant grandma had outside on the porch and the best part was we wouldn't get in trouble for it because the adults never had to know!  You just go over and rip a chunk of this wonderful plant off and rub the sticky gooey end on wherever and whatever is hurt...and there you go!

Number two, Apple Cider Vinegar.  ALWAYS have it on hand.  It's great!  It is the only thing I've ever tried that ALMOST INSTANTLY cures hiccups!  I hate hiccups.  HATE hiccups there is nothing worse.  It can acutally hurt ya know?  Well 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar and they are GONE yeah it's kind of rough going down but like I said almost instantly gone.  This second hand info came from Great-Grandma Dorris on my mom's side.  *And she actually looked like Dorris Day, fun fact*

And Last, but DEFFINITELY not Least!  My absolute FAVORITE home remedy, and if you're anything like me it'll be yours as well!

Yes.  Yes that is yellow mustard.  Do you know what it cures?  Do you know what it cures instantly and beautifully?  Do you know what obnoxious pain it takes away *that somehow even to this day ALWAYS manages to make me cry?* ...Bee stings, wasp stings, ant stings...pretty much anything that stings you.  Squirt a generous supply of yellow mustard on it.  Nothing is better!  The pain will go away faster than you'd expect!  I will never forget when I first learned about this as a little girl I got stung at my grandma's house and came inside crying and my great grandma cowles *around 90 at the time* walked over and squirted mustard on the offending sting and told me in a firm voice to "hush" I was in shock then I realized the pain was gone!

It works so well that in the summer I actually keep these in my purse *because I hate getting stung and I'm that paranoid*

Second Hand Sunday - Link up!

Welcome to, Second Hand Sunday!

My very first one!  It's going to be a weekly staple on this blog from now on.  I love making something out of nothing, or taking something that's old that nobody wants anymore and making it fabulous and functional!  Unfortunately I can't afford Antique stores or cute shabby chic stuff from Pier 1, Target, and other expensive stores *Or at lest expensive to me right now* you can think of.  So my big things right now are thrift stores, second hand shops, free stuff on the side of the road, things that family is getting rid of, or things that are passed down from other family members!  If it's just cleaning them up a bit or doing a complete over-haul and painting or decorating or even taking it apart to make it better I LOVE IT.  And hopefully am going to start getting even better at it!

Today I'm going to show you one of my recent improvement projects.  I stumbled on this marble box
*it's not really old or anything it's just made to look that way I got it from a friend when he was moving*
when I was cleaning stuff out of our storage shed and the lid fell off and I thought "that would be a cute little shelf wish I could do that" and then I couldn't figure out a reason why I couldn't make it a shelf!  Lol so then it all started.

this is the box when I first found it and emptied out the marbles

the only tools I needed were two paint brushes and a screw driver

I used left over white paint, a ligth green called 'Dakota', and black paint

This is what it looks like now and I LOVE it I'll try and get a picture it's up on our wall right now with our little knick knacks all over it lol

Anything with an arrow by it is second hand.  The blue glass container is my favorite and was 2 dollars, the marbles were from the box I made into a shelf, the candle holder is an old mason jar lid, the chalkboard was an amazing thrift store find for 6 dollars.  The corks were used wine corks from Etsy, the clothespins were for a different craft, and the black and white picture is a photo of my grandfather when he was 17.

This is a frame I picked up for 50 cents at a thrift store the other day, and good thing my husband put togather a 1,000 piece puzzle and wanted to do something with it.  We glued it down and it's now hanging in my brothers room!

This mini-cupcake pan is 1 of 2 that my grandmother gave me and they belonged to her mother I just Love them and use them all the time, I just made cupcakes with my niece in them yesterday!

Do you have any thrift store finds that you just love?  Any old family teasures?  If you have something you'd like to share just grab a button and link up!  I'd love to see what you have!
